Tutors Wanted for Academic Success Center

The Hixson-Lied Student Success Center is currently looking for qualified tutors. We have a high need for biology, chemistry, engineering, math, physics and statistics, but there is a large range of classes we receive tutor requests for throughout the semester. If you are an undergraduate students who would be interested in becoming a tutor, please visit the links below. Four Things Guaranteed to Annoy Your Instructor

Four Things Guaranteed to Annoy Your Instructor

1)      Let your cell phone ring or text message your friends.  Worse yet, answer your phone or text in class.  Please turn it off when you come to class.  If there is a potential emergency and you need to have it on, set it to vibrate and sit near an exit.  Leave the room BEFORE you answer.

2)      Play on your laptop or read the paper.  If you want to check e-mail, surf the web, or read the ISU Daily, then leave the room.  You may feel you can multi-task effectively, but it is disrespectful to the instructor and your fellow students to do so in the classroom.

3)      Hold a side discussion with your friends.  Talk before class.  Talk after class.  Pay attention and stay awake during class.

4)      Send or leave messages without identifying yourself.  Use your full name in e-mails or voice messages.  Your e-mail address does NOT always identify you effectively.  Bonus points if you spell out words completely and correctly and use proper grammar and punctuation.   You may need your instructor for a reference someday; try to leave a professional impression with every interaction.

Internship Opportunity - Iowa Pork Producers Association - Ag Comm Student

Purpose

The future of agriculture depends on the involvement of the next generation…tomorrow’s leaders. The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) created this internship to encourage students to become involved in the pork industry and gain the knowledge needed to lead the future of the pork industry. This intern will be directly involved with the planning and facilitating of the Iowa Pork Congress, as well as other producer programs that take place in the Fall of 2012 thru end of January of 2013.

Responsibilities

1. Observe the functions of an agricultural organization

2. Assist IPPA staff and producer leaders with the planning and the facilitating of the 2014 Iowa Pork Congress in January

3. Assist the Producer Education Director with other producer programs throughout the internship

4. Assist with writing press releases and feature stories for the Iowa Pork Producer magazine

5. Represent the Iowa Pork Producers Association throughout the internship

Schedule

Fall/Winter schedule: October 7, 2013 - January 31, 2014

1. IPPA will work around intern’s class schedule and the intern is expected to work in the IPPA office in Clive a minimum of 20 hours/week

Selection Criteria

The position is available to any student, but preference will be given to the following criteria:

1. Preferably an Iowa resident

2. A full-time college student with an agricultural-related major that has experience in communication and journalism

3. Student in good scholastic standing with excellent written and oral communication skills

4. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs

5. Exhibits a strong and true interest in agriculture, ideally the pork industry

Financial Assistance

The intern will be paid a $4,000 stipend to help cover expenses during the internship and will receive a $2,000 scholarship paid directly to their school.

Application Process

Please submit a cover letter, resume, and 500 word essay on “What do you consider to be a key issue facing the pork industry in the next ten years,” by September 9, 2013.
