EARTH Informational Meeting

We are having a  EARTH (Education and Resiliency Through Horticulture) recruitment meeting on Wednesday – October 2^nd at 5pm in Rm. 110 Hort Hall.  We will show a brief presentation about the EARTH program, enjoy a few snacks, and answer any questions students might have at that time.

Background about EARTH: 

Since 2010 Iowa State University (ISU) has partnered with Gifft Hill School (GHS) on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to provide a school gardening/service-learning program known as the EARTH Program (Education and Resiliency Through Horticulture).  The goals of the program are to:

o   Design, install and manage attractive landscapes at the school that relate to sustainable food production and landscape design

o   Establish an integrated hands-on curriculum that includes horticulture and place-based environmental science

o   Provide healthy, locally grown food to the GHS community

o   Provide usable outdoor space for students to learn and work

o   Create a positive perception of horticulture with GHS students

o   Integrated ISU and GHS students in classroom and elective activities

Each semester fall, spring, and summer students from ISU spend 8-12 weeks on St. John as service learning students.  They have the opportunity to integrate and apply everything they have learned while at ISU to teach horticulture, environmental science, and health and nutrition classes to K-12 youth.  Students also build facilities that will benefit the school for years to come, work with local experts to learn more about tropical horticulture and plant ecology, and assist with community development projects on the island.

7 Study Tips For Upcoming Exams!

Hey everyone!

Glad to see you are surviving so far! We are quickly approaching almost a month into classes now, how crazy! That being said that means that first round of exams will be coming up soon. That’s a little bit scary to think about and may make you nervous, especially if I am just now breaking it to you that you will have tests in the next couple weeks! Don’t worry though because I am here to help calm your nerves! I have some tips to help get you through your first round of exams!

1. Change Up Your Study Environment - If you have become accustomed to studying in one certain spot on campus or wherever you like to study, then switch it up! Studies have shown that when you break your routine and study in a new environment you can retain information more effectively!

2. Study Groups - Studying in a group is a great way to reduce the amount of subject matter you would have to go over by yourself. Group work is awesome because one person may know how to do a specific thing well so they can teach you how to do it in a way you’ll remember! Also, you may make new friends!

3. Old/Practice Exams - Some professors will offer old exams or practice exams for you to go over. You should definitely do this so you can get a feel for what the test is like, and so you can break down every question individually and find the answer for it. Really a great way to study if made available for you!

4. Go To Class - Plain and simple. If you go to class then obviously you are probably going to find out some much needed information about your exam. So get to class, pay attention, take notes, and ask questions!

5. Don’t Overload Yourself With Subject Material - Instead of sitting down with one subject and going over every single note and page in the book for hours until you master it isn’t exactly the best form of studying, and it’ll probably leave you exhausted! So try and break up your studying into different subjects. Study a subject for an hour, take a small break, and then study a different subject for an hour. Repeat this process until you’ve got it all down. Plus this way of studying is less boring also!

6. Manage Your Time - I’m sure you have heard this numerous times from your parents and teachers, but I’m a student, so I’m different! Not managing your time can really throw you off, trust me. I’ve been there and done that. Having a deadline for things is great until you miss that deadline! Try and stay organized by getting a calendar or whiteboard where you can write down what you have to do and when it needs to be done by. This really helps me because I can physically cross it off my list and that’s a big confidence booster when you can see you are getting things done. I know you don’t want to hear it but I am going to say it anyways.. Don’t procrastinate! For those of you reading this that know me well are saying “yeah, take your own advice!” I am definitely guilty of procrastinating from time to time, but it’s no fun once you have procrastinated too long! So stay on top of things and you’ll be just fine! Keep track of your exam dates!  

7. GET SLEEP!!! - This one is so important! I know that sometimes it seems impossible to find time to sleep, but too many all-nighters will beat you down in a mean way. That’s a good way to get sick and nobody likes that. Sleep goes with managing time. Try and give yourself time to get at least 6 hours of good sleep a night. Power naps are also a wonderful thing!

We’re looking for a public relations intern who can bring their talents to help us help our clients tell their story.

The Lessing-Flynn intern should be available to work between 12-20 hours per week, for which they will be compensated with a reasonable hourly wage. We’re flexible and willing to accommodate the right student’s schedule, and extra hours may be available if you’re a real overachiever.

What are we looking for?

• Social media savvy
• Good writing skills and able to edit in a compelling and succinct way

What we’ll be asking you to do:
• Monitor public relations campaigns and create reports
• Media relations – you’ll actually get to pitch the media!

• Learn how to plan marketing and PR campaigns

Qualified candidates will be a college junior or senior pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Journalism, or Communications.
Strong communication skills and a passion for success are desired.

AFA Intern

INTERN FOR AFA

AFA generally hosts one or two paid internships per year at the office in Kansas City. Selected applicants are also eligible to receive sponsorship to the AFA Leaders Conference and an academic scholarship for tuition and fees. Housing is not provided (although assistance will be available). Applicants must submit an application, resume and two writing samples or program design examples. Applications typically open in early fall and selections for summer internships will be made after the first of the year.

Winter/Summer Program InternThe program intern assists the organization with general program delivery and future design, as well as creating long-term strategies to successfully prepare college men and women for career success. The program intern will report to the Vice President of Leader and Organization Services.

        Requirements:

1. Junior status or above in undergraduate course work
2. Strong interest and understanding in the mission of AFA
3. Career interest in youth development, human resource, communication, marketing or similar career
4. Training and work in leader development desirable

Agricultural Weekend Experience

Attention all College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students:
Ever wondered what it would be like to live on a farm in Iowa? Ever wondered how farmers make their decisions on running a successful operation?
Here's your chance to find out! The ISU Agricultural Endowment and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are proud to sponsor the tenth Agriculture Weekend Experience (AWE). This weekend experience with a host Iowa farm family is free to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students and includes transportation, lodging and meals for a weekend. Participants will tour local Iowa agricultural businesses (including a dairy farm, cattle feedlot, ethanol plant and more) while staying on a host family’s farm and learning more about their farming activities. Whether you have had experience on a farm or not, you have not experienced everything that is scheduled for AWE.
Applications are due Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. The 2013 AWE program is scheduled to depart campus the afternoon of Friday, October 11, and to return the afternoon of Sunday, October 13. An orientation session tentatively is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8.

Be a part of new ISU TV Commercials!

Who: Applied Art and Design, a professional production company from Des Moines, with an executive director from Los Angeles

What: Need 60 Iowa State student extras of various ethnicities, between the ages of 18 and 26, to be non-speaking background extras for two Iowa State student recruitment TV spots to be videotaped on campus September 24, 25 and 26 during the day and early evening.  This is a non-union, 2-year buyout for all TV and web rights for a national 30-second commercial.  Each extra chosen will be paid $20 for his/her time.  ( Sorry, current Cyclone student athletes are not eligible to participate.) 

When: Auditions will be held Tuesday, September 17, at 5 p.m. 

Where: Room 2140 Pearson Hall. 

How: At the audition, each person will be interviewed briefly, picture taken, contact information collected, and availability determined for which days and which segments of the day.  Each person selected will only be needed for 2-3 hours on one of the three days, September 24, 25 or 26.

Part Time Harvest Help Needed

I would like to find 2-3 students to help after class and on the weekends. I would prefer that they have a CDL, but it is not required. General farm background and experience with farm machinery is also required.  I am located 10 miles north of Ames and have had very good experiences with past college student workers.  Pay will be based on experience.

I am mainly looking for fall help, but also would be able to provide part time work in the winter and spring.

Thursday, September 12 –  Tyler Farr  (country)
Tyler Farr was first introduced to country music at age 16, when he spent a summer on the road with his stepfather, the lead guitarist for country icon George Jones. Farr moved to Nashville and eventually landed a recording contract on Sony Music Nashville’s BNA Records. He’s toured extensively with Colt Ford, for whom he wrote the song, “Hey Y’all,” and has opened and toured with a multitude of notable artists. His four-song EP, Camouflage has been well received and includes popular singles "Hot Mess," "Hello Goodbye" and "Redneck Crazy."

Friday, September 13 –   Caroline Glaser  (acoustic pop)  
Caroline Glaser was in her first year at college, performing open mic nights at local coffee shops and making videos on her YouTube page, when she auditioned for season 4 of NBC’s hit TV show The Voice.   The judges were overwhelmed with affection, and the watching world was smitten. Adam Levine from Maroon 5 described Glaser's voice as "ethereal, magic and wonderful."   She ultimately didn’t win, but did make a real connection with an instant fan base begging for more.

Jon McLaughlin’s songs have yielded placements on the TV series Scrubs and movies including Georgia Rule and Bridge to Terabithia. The singer and his song “So Close” were also featured in the Disney film Enchanted starring Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams and he was later asked to perform the song at the 2008 Academy Awards. He released his fourth album Promising Promises last year which included the single “Summer Is Over” featuring Sara Bareilles.

Texas-based blues guitarist Jim Suhler has been playing professionally since the 1980’s. Why the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team?

The future of Iowa Corn depends on the organization’s ability to offer relevant programming, advocacy and services to new stakeholders entering Iowa’s agricultural sector who will be potential supporters and leaders of Iowa Corn.  These stakeholders include students who are pursuing careers in Iowa’s agriculture industry.

What is the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team?

The Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team assists the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) in developing programs that target and enhance Iowa Corn’s relationship with those individuals who are pursuing careers in agricultural production and allied industries. The Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team is made up of students seeking degrees related to agriculture at Iowa’s colleges and universities.  The team will include one representative from each community college agriculture program, one each from Dordt College and Graceland University, and five students from ISU.  Two additional positions on the team are available for students in non-ag disciplines at any accredited Iowa college or university.

 Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team Objectives:

• Define future roles for the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team.
• Select and develop appropriate program components for ongoing student programs.
• Distribute funding among various student organizations using criteria developed by the Team.
• Assist with the development of Iowa Corn student and youth outreach programs.

Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team members must:

• Sign a form agreeing to attend two sessions (November and February/March) during the year, as well as other Iowa Corn activities as determined by staff and the Team (and as student schedules permit).
• Be available via email and by phone during the year for team discussions.
• Prepare as needed for team sessions;
• Be willing to consider new ideas and experiences.

 Schedule

The first meeting of the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team (CAT) will be held on November 14 and 15, 2013.  A second meeting of the CAT will be held in mid-February or early March, 2014. CAT members may also be asked to attend various Iowa Corn activities which include (but are not limited to): Iowa Corn committee and board meetings, ICGA Annual Meeting, ICGA Day on the Hill, Iowa Corn Indy 250 and Iowa-Iowa State GameDay events.  Qualifying team members will be invited to travel with the Iowa Corn delegation to the NCGA Corn Congress meetings in Washington, D.C. in July of 2014.

Cost:

The costs associated with Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team programming, meals, travel and lodging will be paid for by ICPB and ICGA.  CAT members will be reimbursed for approved expenses incurred due to team activities, and will also receive a $200 scholarship in August 2014 for participating in the program.

Who can apply?

Any student enrolled in an agriculture program at one of the following colleges and universities may submit an application to be a Collegiate Advisory Team member:

Graceland University	Northeast Iowa Community College

Iowa Central Community College	Western Iowa Tech Community College
Iowa Lakes Community College

One student will be selected to represent each of the schools listed above, except for Iowa State University, which will be represented by five students.

In addition, two students working on non-agriculture degrees at any accredited college or university in Iowa may be chosen to serve on the team.

Complete all portions of the application form and submit via email to Don Mason (dmason@iowacorn.org) at the Iowa Corn office no later than September 27, 2013.  Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly to Don Mason at Iowa Corn by the persons providing them.  All applicants will be notified of the results of the selection process by October 11, 2013.
