NASDA Seeking Applicants for 2014 Internship Opportunities

NASDA is currently seeking highly motivated public policy interns interested in learning about the legislation and regulations that impact American agriculture. There is one internship position available per semester and we most urgently need applications for the upcoming spring semester(January - May).

Applicants should be classified as a sophomore or greater by their academic institution and have excellent written and oral communication skills. A basic understanding of the legislative process is preferred but not required.
Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

·         Conduct research on various legislative issues of importance to NASDA’s membership

·         Represent NASDA in Congressional hearings, conference calls, and other venues, and provide written analysis of these events to policy staff members

·         Write articles covering various agricultural issues for NASDA’s weekly newsletters

·         Manage logistics, provide operational support, and interface with senior state and federal agriculture policy makers in a fast-paced environment during NASDA’s Annual Meeting (Fall) or Winter Policy Conference (Spring)

·         Answer phones, monitor Congressional calendar, manage House and Senate e-mail distribution lists, and distribute mail to staff

Interns are paid for their time at NASDA but housing is not provided.

·         Resume with GPA included

·         One writing sample that is one to two pages in length

·         Two letters of reference

Application Deadlines

·         Spring Semester (January - May): Apply by November 20

·         Summer Semester (May - August): Apply by February 1

·         Fall Semester (August - December): Apply by May 1

Young Leader Scholarship Program

The Mid America CropLife Association is pleased to announce the continuation of the Young Leader Scholarship Program (YLSP) for the second year as we believe it benefit students who have an interest in agriculture.   MACA is an association made up of basic manufacturers, distributors/formulators and allied industry from the crop protection industry.  The program details are attached.

Participation:  Please accept this email as an introduction to the scholarship program that MACA designed to encourage more young people to be involved in agriculture.  We believe there is a bright future ahead.  In the next few days, one of the MACA volunteers who is a member of the MACA leadership team will be contacting you to discuss this program and to encourage your participation as well as answer any questions you might have.

Next Steps: 

1. Your help is needed to get the word out to potential students who meet the qualifications for having enough credits and an internship arranged for the summer of 2014  and are interested in completing a scholarship application. 
2. An application for the students to complete and submit has been developed and is attached to this email for your use.  Please note the contact person needs to be added to the application on page 6.
3. Then we ask that you work with the appropriate people at your college to select the two finalists and submit their names and applications by February 7, 2014 for MACA’s review to determine the scholarship winner.
4. Coordinating the scholarship payment or gift agreement will be done with MACA’s Executive Director Bonnie McCarvel.  She can be reached at 314-849-9446 or bonnie@maca.org.
5. MACA plans to review the program after the 2014 MACA Annual Meeting in an effort to build on the program to make it better in the future.

MACA Background:  MACA is a non-profit association composed of basic manufacturers, distributors/formulators, seed companies and allied industry such as consultants, warehouse and technology companies that provide product and services for the crop protection industry in the Midwest.  We have about 60 member companies which include basic manufacturers BASF, Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta Crop Protection.  The distribution/formulator members include:  Crop Production Services, GROWMARK, Inc., Helena Chemical Company, MFA plus several others.  The Midwest region covers the states of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

MACA Annual Meeting:  The MACA Annual Meeting occurs at the beginning of the industry’s marketing year (September – August) and as a result various company executives and key members of their sales, marketing, and regulatory staff attend the meeting.  In addition, several industry trade journals and broadcast media usually cover the meeting.  Normally there are 100-110 people present for the program as they are interested in the various issues and perspectives.  Attached is a flyer which showcases the 2013 recipients that you may want to post or share with potential students.

If you know students who would make great leaders, encourage them to be team leaders during Destination Iowa State, Aug. 21-23, 2014. It's an excellent way for current students to show their Cyclone pride, be part of a team, develop leadership skills and earn up to $250 for their work. Each team leader mentors a group of approximately 15 students through the Destination Iowa State experience. More information and the application are online; applications are due Friday, Feb. 7.
