EARTH Informational Meeting

We are having a  EARTH (Education and Resiliency Through Horticulture) recruitment meeting on Wednesday – October 2^nd at 5pm in Rm. 110 Hort Hall.  We will show a brief presentation about the EARTH program, enjoy a few snacks, and answer any questions students might have at that time.

Background about EARTH: 

Since 2010 Iowa State University (ISU) has partnered with Gifft Hill School (GHS) on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to provide a school gardening/service-learning program known as the EARTH Program (Education and Resiliency Through Horticulture).  The goals of the program are to:

o   Design, install and manage attractive landscapes at the school that relate to sustainable food production and landscape design

o   Establish an integrated hands-on curriculum that includes horticulture and place-based environmental science

o   Provide healthy, locally grown food to the GHS community

o   Provide usable outdoor space for students to learn and work

o   Create a positive perception of horticulture with GHS students

o   Integrated ISU and GHS students in classroom and elective activities

Each semester fall, spring, and summer students from ISU spend 8-12 weeks on St. John as service learning students.  They have the opportunity to integrate and apply everything they have learned while at ISU to teach horticulture, environmental science, and health and nutrition classes to K-12 youth.  Students also build facilities that will benefit the school for years to come, work with local experts to learn more about tropical horticulture and plant ecology, and assist with community development projects on the island.

7 Study Tips For Upcoming Exams!

Hey everyone!

Glad to see you are surviving so far! We are quickly approaching almost a month into classes now, how crazy! That being said that means that first round of exams will be coming up soon. That’s a little bit scary to think about and may make you nervous, especially if I am just now breaking it to you that you will have tests in the next couple weeks! Don’t worry though because I am here to help calm your nerves! I have some tips to help get you through your first round of exams!

1. Change Up Your Study Environment - If you have become accustomed to studying in one certain spot on campus or wherever you like to study, then switch it up! Studies have shown that when you break your routine and study in a new environment you can retain information more effectively!

2. Study Groups - Studying in a group is a great way to reduce the amount of subject matter you would have to go over by yourself. Group work is awesome because one person may know how to do a specific thing well so they can teach you how to do it in a way you’ll remember! Also, you may make new friends!

3. Old/Practice Exams - Some professors will offer old exams or practice exams for you to go over. You should definitely do this so you can get a feel for what the test is like, and so you can break down every question individually and find the answer for it. Really a great way to study if made available for you!

4. Go To Class - Plain and simple. If you go to class then obviously you are probably going to find out some much needed information about your exam. So get to class, pay attention, take notes, and ask questions!

5. Don’t Overload Yourself With Subject Material - Instead of sitting down with one subject and going over every single note and page in the book for hours until you master it isn’t exactly the best form of studying, and it’ll probably leave you exhausted! So try and break up your studying into different subjects. Study a subject for an hour, take a small break, and then study a different subject for an hour. Repeat this process until you’ve got it all down. Plus this way of studying is less boring also!

6. Manage Your Time - I’m sure you have heard this numerous times from your parents and teachers, but I’m a student, so I’m different! Not managing your time can really throw you off, trust me. I’ve been there and done that. Having a deadline for things is great until you miss that deadline! Try and stay organized by getting a calendar or whiteboard where you can write down what you have to do and when it needs to be done by. This really helps me because I can physically cross it off my list and that’s a big confidence booster when you can see you are getting things done. I know you don’t want to hear it but I am going to say it anyways.. Don’t procrastinate! For those of you reading this that know me well are saying “yeah, take your own advice!” I am definitely guilty of procrastinating from time to time, but it’s no fun once you have procrastinated too long! So stay on top of things and you’ll be just fine! Keep track of your exam dates!  

7. GET SLEEP!!! - This one is so important! I know that sometimes it seems impossible to find time to sleep, but too many all-nighters will beat you down in a mean way. That’s a good way to get sick and nobody likes that. Sleep goes with managing time. Try and give yourself time to get at least 6 hours of good sleep a night. Power naps are also a wonderful thing!

Public Relations Internship

We’re looking for a public relations intern who can bring their talents to help us help our clients tell their story.

The Lessing-Flynn intern should be available to work between 12-20 hours per week, for which they will be compensated with a reasonable hourly wage. We’re flexible and willing to accommodate the right student’s schedule, and extra hours may be available if you’re a real overachiever.

What are we looking for? 
• Outside of the box thinking
• Social media savvy
• Good writing skills and able to edit in a compelling and succinct way
• Able to manage projects and deliver on deadlines
• Technology skills – including Mac, Microsoft Office and maybe even graphic design basics
• Spark!

What we’ll be asking you to do:
• Monitor public relations campaigns and create reports
• Media relations – you’ll actually get to pitch the media!
• Research products, trends and competitors
• Sit in on real client meetings and hear decisions as they are being made
• Learn how to plan marketing and PR campaigns

Qualified candidates will be a college junior or senior pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Journalism, or Communications.
Strong communication skills and a passion for success are desired.

AFA Intern

INTERN FOR AFA

AFA generally hosts one or two paid internships per year at the office in Kansas City. Selected applicants are also eligible to receive sponsorship to the AFA Leaders Conference and an academic scholarship for tuition and fees. Housing is not provided (although assistance will be available). Applicants must submit an application, resume and two writing samples or program design examples. Applications typically open in early fall and selections for summer internships will be made after the first of the year.

Winter/Summer Program InternThe program intern assists the organization with general program delivery and future design, as well as creating long-term strategies to successfully prepare college men and women for career success. The program intern will report to the Vice President of Leader and Organization Services.

        Requirements:

1. Junior status or above in undergraduate course work
2. Strong interest and understanding in the mission of AFA
3. Career interest in youth development, human resource, communication, marketing or similar career
4. Training and work in leader development desirable

ISU Major Fair October 1

The ISU Major Fair will be held Tuesday, October 1, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM in the MU Great Hall.  The Major Fair gives students a chance to explore all ISU majors in one place; representatives from over 100 majors will be available to provide information and answer questions so you can learn about any major or career path you’ve been considering.  If you are open option, are considering changing your major, or have struggled to find the right career path, the Major Fair is for you!
